Imaging Software Aids Diagnosis and Therapy

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 21 Oct 2001
Software for medical imaging that helps doctors screen, diagnose, and treat patients has been updated with new tools for treating strokes, placing stents, and planning for surgical procedures. More...

Called Vitrea 2 version 2.5, the software includes an option for computed tomography (CT) brain perfusion that helps radiologists analyze blood flow in stroke victims and generates color images that aid in the evaluation of brain tissue damage. Another option helps doctors characterize the course and dimensions of diseased blood vessels, providing five critical measurements that can help doctors plan the placement of stents.

Another option allows doctors to customize basic presets for their own requirements. New 3-D volume rendering improves fidelity and realism of internal views of the anatomy, such as required by virtual colonoscopy. In addition, carotid CT angiography includes a bone-removal feature that improves the ability to perform limited bone see-through, which allows immediate surgical planning. Vitrea 2 version 2.5 was developed by Vital Images, Inc. (Minneapolis, MN, USA).

"The simplicity of CT Brain Perfusion on Vitrea 2 is astounding,” said Dr. Charles L. Truwit, professor and chief, department of radiology, at Hennepin County Medical Center (Minneapolis). "We have used competitor systems and they remain extremely labor-intensive and cumbersome.”
