Bipolar RF Device for Resection and Coagulation

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 01 May 2002
A new tissue resection device combines the benefits of mechanical blades with bipolar radiofrequency (RF) to provide simultaneous resection and coagulation of soft tissue.

The device is designed to simplify operating room setup, decrease the amount of additional equipment needed to perform both resection and coagulation techniques, and reduce the need for an intraoperative pause to change or rotate an instrument. More...
Called the Electro-Blade Resector, the device can be used in a variety of arthroscopic procedures, including anterior cruciate ligament repair, subacromial decompression, lateral release, synovectomy, and capsular release.

"The ability to simultaneously resect and coagulate soft tissue is unparalleled in the medical community,” said Dr. James Andrews, chairman, American Sports Medicine Institute (Birmingham, AL, USA). "In addition, the capacity to provide a clear field of vision during surgery will enhance surgeon control of the procedure and will lessen the overall operating time.”

The Electro-Blade Resector is the product of Smith & Nephew, Inc., Endoscopy Division (Andover, MA, USA), a leading developer of endoscopic techniques for arthroscopy, procedures performed on articulating joints.
