Ultrasonic Surgical System for Soft Tissue

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 23 Sep 2002
An ultrasonic surgical system can be used for cutting and coagulation of soft tissue structures in endoscopic and open surgical procedures. More...
The system has been cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Called Sonic Scalpel, the system is the latest addition to the ultrasonic technology platform of Axya Medical, Inc. (Beverly, MA, USA; www.axya.com). The company formerly introduced the AxyaWeld, which uses ultrasonic energy to weld surgical sutures, replacing knot tying by the surgeon. Surgeons report that it virtually eliminates the risk of knot slippage or unraveling and is especially helpful in minimally invasive surgery where access to the surgical site is limited. It has been used for shoulder repair, hand and wrist surgery, gynecologic procedures and general surgery in open, laparoscopic, and arthroscopic procedures.

"The surgeon will now have the Sonic Scalpel available to dissect and coagulate tissue while proceeding to the surgical site, use it to complete the excision, then use AxyaWeld to repair the site and close tissue layers when exiting the wound,” said an Axya spokesperson.
