Illuminated Forceps Focuses Light on Deep Incisions

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 16 Oct 2002
A new disposable lighting system connects quickly with a forceps to focus light in small, deep incisions, reducing the need to alter headlamp position. More...
The system was introduced at the annual meeting of the American College of Surgeons in San Francisco.

In a survey of more than 400 operating room nurses, 60% noted that they frequently heard surgeons complain about neck strain caused by headlamps. The new system, called Solight, features a clear fiber-optic cable, a stainless steel light rod and a rubber instrument mount that attaches the rod to forceps of various lengths. The sterile, single-use device maximizes illumination at the tip of the forceps and minimizes heat conduction.

Solight is being marketed by the V. Mueller surgical instruments unit of Allegiance Healthcare (McGaw Park, IL, USA).

"Solight brings light into the surgical field where it's most needed. Until now, we just haven't had anything quite like this product,” said Dr. Robert G. Johnson, chairman of the surgery department at St. Louis University Medical Center (MO, USA).
