New Staples with Directional Stapling Technology

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 16 Oct 2002
A new series of surgical staplers incorporates technology that allows the staples to bend in the desired plane more consistently and reliably than traditional staples.

The staplers incorporate newly designed staple wire and an anvil especially engineered to improve staple formation. More...
In combination with the new anvil bucket that provides a wider target area, they can perform better, especially during challenging applications, says the developer, United States Surgical (Norwalk, CT, USA; www.ussurgical.com).

The company has also developed a new series of 45 mm staplers specifically designed to address the needs of colorectal surgeons. Colorectal procedures can be difficult when the deep, narrow, male pelvis is too small to accommodate the size of a 60-mm stapler and the colon is too large for a 30-mm to be effective.

"With the introduction of the DST Series staplers, surgeons will now have a tool that they can be confident will deliver an improved outcome, even in adverse conditions,” said Alan Panzer, president of United States Surgical.
