Laparoscopic Kit Aids Vaginal Vault Suspension

By HospiMedica staff writers

A laparoscopic surgical procedure kit is designed for use in strengthening the uterosacral ligaments to support the vagina in post-hysterectomy patients. More...

More than 600,000 hysterectomies have been performed in the United States alone during the past decade. As a result of hysterectomy, many women have weakened ligaments, which can lead to a variety of gynecologic problems. The new kit simplifies the suturing process in vaginal vault suspension, making this type of surgery accessible to more surgeons, says the developer. The kit, called Avesta, has been cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

"The Avesta procedure kit is designed to make it faster and easier for surgeons to re-attach and/or shorten and strengthen the uterosacral ligaments during vaginal vault suspension post-hysterectomy,” said Lee Jones, president and CEO of Inlet Medical, Inc. (Eden Prairie, MN, USA; www.inletmedical.com), which developed the kit. The company specializes in surgical products for the women's health market.
