Treatment for Women with Stress Urinary Incontinence

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 12 Mar 2003
A simple outpatient procedure shows cure rates of 85-90% in women with stress urinary incontinence (SUI). More...
The procedure has shown a high success rate even when other surgical treatments have failed.

In the procedure, surgical mesh is placed under the urethra, where it offers tension-free support during times of stress, thus stopping involuntary leakage of urine. The procedure takes only 20-30 minutes. Called tension-free vaginal tape (TVT), the treatment should be considered for women with SUI for whom nonsurgical treatments have failed after three to six months, says the developer, Gynecare. Gynecare is a division of Ethicon, Inc. (Somerville, NJ, USA).

"Stress incontinence is a very widespread condition, but one that remains largely hidden. Embarrassment, ignorance, and the association of incontinence with old age have prevented many women from seeking treatment,” said Dr. Judith Wardle, director of the Continence Foundation (London, UK.
