Hip Replacement System Needs No Preoperative Scan

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 03 Jul 2003
A total hip replacement system eliminates the need for any preoperative computed tomography (CT) scan. More...
The system has been cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The computer-assisted surgery system is equipped with a 3D tracking feature that allows surgeons to visualize the position of instruments relative to bone structures in real-time and 3D. When used in combination with a computer workstation, the system allows for the measurement of all intraoperative surgical parameters: inclination, anteversion, leg-length changes, offset changes, and implant position.

Developed by Orthosoft, Inc. (Montreal, Canada; www.orthosoft.ca), the system is also designed to improve surgical precision and implant functionality and longevity. The system, called Total Hip Replacement CT-Free Cup, is being distributed by Centerpulse (Zurich, Switzerland; www.centerpulse.com).

"Orthosoft's new total hip replacement computer-assisted application is the most advanced technology currently available on the market,” said Yvan Beaudoin, director, business development and sales, Orthosoft. "Thanks to our open-architecture technology, our applications could be implemented on most popular computer-assisted surgery workstations.”
