Safer, Faster 3D Complete Body Scan with PET

New 3-D complete body screening (3D-CBS) using positron emission tomography (PET) is based on technology that makes the system much faster and safe enough for use in routine preventive patient examinations.

Field-programmable gate arrays accelerate the processing of the algorithms that allow this new PET imaging to more accurately examine a patient's body while using only 4% of the radiation that would be received by the patient in a traditional PET scan. More...
Currently, full-body screening with PET is controversial because of the radiation exposure and doubts over the benefits. Also, the procedure is very slow and costly.

The 3D-CBS system was developed by 3D-Computing (DeSoto, TX, USA), which states that the system more accurately captures a greater number of the photons emitted from the tracer medium when a patient is scanned, reducing radiation and improving image quality. The field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) used in the system are from Altera Corp. (San Jose, CA, USA).

"Each photon detection board in the 3D-CBS system utilizes 20 Altera FPGAs to accelerate digital signal processing functions, which play a crucial role in the system's ability to reduce radiation to the patient, shorten examination times, and improve image quality,” said Dario Crosetto, inventor of the new technology and CEO of 3D Computing.
