3-D Breast Imaging Systems Cleared by FDA

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 20 Dec 2000
A new breast imaging camera with 3-D capability, and a digital stereotactic feature have been cleared by the U.S. More...
Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use on the Diamond mammography system of Instrumentarium (Helsinki, Finland).

The Delta 32 tuned aperture computed tomography (TACT) 3-D feature allows users to see the breast in three dimensions or as separate layers for easy assessment of biopsy depth and wire localization placement, reducing false positives. The Delta 2-D digital stereotactic feature offers the ability to image from any two angles. This flexibility results in less patient positioning, saving time and improving the patient's experience. Both features are available as upgrades on the Diamond system.

In addition to 3-D and stereotactic imaging, the Diamond system also offers film-based imaging. It is the first system to address the repetitive stress concerns of technologists, says Instrumentarium. The tube head moves back to provide an open workspace, allowing technicians to position oblique views while standing comfortably. An amorphous selenium full-field digital upgrade kit is in development.
