High-Resolution Technology in PET/CT

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 11 Dec 2003
A new generation of positron emission tomography/computed radiography (PET/CT) systems has three times higher spatial resolution than existing systems. More...
The technology was introduced at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) in Chicago (IL, USA).

The PET/CT system combines two modalities to produce a single image of both metabolic function and anatomic structure that enables doctors to more accurately identify the precise location of abnormalities. The new high-resolution system, called HI-REZ, uses patented LSO detector technology to provide enhanced spacial resolution. It was developed by CTI Molecular Imaging, Inc. (Knoxville, TN, USA), a leading supplier of products and services for PET.

"The images from the HI-REZ PET/CT are of exceptional quality,” said Dr. David Townsend, co-inventor of the PET/CT and a recipient of the 2004 Distinguished Clinical Scientist of the Year Award by the Academy of Molecular Imaging, who was one of the keynote speakers at RSNA. "The system offers the potential to visualize disease that is smaller in size or earlier in development and which might well have been overlooked in some patients using existing PET technology.”
