Magnetic Resonance System Acquires Images Faster

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 02 Jan 2001
A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system acquires images twice as fast as its forerunner and offers other performance advances, including improved contrast and better diffusion image quality.

The improved MRI system, called Intera, incorporates a sensitivity encoding technique with a two-element phased-array coil that doubles image speed. More...
Even higher scanning speeds are possible by using coils with more elements, notes the marketer, Philips Medical System (Best, The Netherlands) The new encoding technique, called SENSE, was developed by Philips in collaboration with The Institute of Biomedical Engineering (Zurich, Switzerland). SENSE uses a parallel approach to speed up image acquisition. Gradient phase encoding steps are skipped and the missing information is acquired by arrays of receiver coils with known sensitivities, resulting in reductions in acquisition time.

The new RapidView reconstructor can reconstruct 255 images per second, up 30% from the prior version. Balanced fast field echo (FFE) is important for image quality due to high speed sequences. "In heart studies, balanced FFE increases contrast between blood and myocardium, significantly improving the delineation of the endocardial border and improving the detection of wall-motion abnormalities,” said Joop van den Heuvel, global product manager for Intera.
