Enhanced Speech-Recognition System

Posted on 17 Feb 2005
A speech-recognition system has now been enhanced to increase the choice of reporting-workflows available in hospital-wide scenarios. More...

SpeechMagic, developed by Philips Speech Recognition Systems(Best, The Netherlands), has a new enhancement called Island Mode, which is designed for increased access to SpeechMagic outside of the central network, for example, on a laptop or tablet PC. In conjunction with the enhanced front-end features, physicians can now finalize reports directly on their mobile computer anytime, anywhere. Alternatively, they can forward automatically generated text to a medical transcriptionist over their preferred network.

"SpeechMagic continues to support the widely preferred back-end speech recognition workflow, where the author dictates and a transcriptionist finalizes the report. In addition, the extended front-end capabilities continue to improve ease of use, enabling physicians to create reports hands-free and without the involvement of a transcriptionist--either on an optional basis, for example, on weekends, or as a full alternative to the back-end workflow,” said Bjoern Aune, sales director, North America, for Philips Speech Recognition Systems.

Features of the system include direct dictation into medical templates to facilitate report creation; inserting auto-text by voice command to reduce dictation volume: blocks of standard texts (normals) and text blocks with fields. Specific values, such as body height or weight, can be dictated into predefined forms within standard text blocks. Numerous reporting and dictation features can be controlled hands-free by voice command, for example, navigating through the application, selecting a patient's file from a list, or test formatting during and after dictation.
