Latest-Generation IGRT Technology

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 27 May 2005
A latest-generation linear accelerator has been developed for image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT) applications.

The new system is equipped with multilaminas, minimultilaminas, portal vision, and a Moduleaf system as an extra capability of minilaminas of 2.5 mm--the thinnest that currently exists in this technology--that can shape irregular portions of tumors with much greater precision. More...
Up to now, laminas of 1 cm have been used, in which the dosimetric yield is less exact in the instance of small lesions. The new system, developed by Siemens Medical Solutions (Erlangen, Germany), enables the application of very precisely-adapted treatments such as radiotherapy stereotactics, radiosurgery, and modulated intensity treatment. Using minimultilaminas, users can modulate the beam intensity at smaller volumes of tissue, thereby providing a greater number of applications.

This system has just been installed at the Navarra University Hospital
(Spain; www.unav.es) and is particularly useful for the treatment of brain tumors that are small and of irregular shape, both malignant and benign, as well as cerebral functional pathology. The system can be used as a therapeutic alternative for selected lung tumors, spinal tumors close to the spinal cord, and tumors at the base of the cranium.

Additionally, the new accelerator is capable, by means of its portal vision, of accurately comparing the radiation field in real time with the computer-designed one, and in this way, in situ corrections for deviations in the positioning of the patient can be carried out, or for the movements in the organ itself where the tumor can vary daily, and finally, for alterations in the size of the tumor as a response to the treatment.

Finally, the system can also deliver the traditional form of treatment--tridimensional and modulated radiotherapy with conventional laminas, thereby being complementary to the rest of the latest technologies in the cancer diagnosis and treatment field.
