Software for Gastro Video Capsules

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 20 Sep 2005
New software has been developed for use with the PillCam gastrointestinal (GI) video capsules.

The Rapid 4 software was developed by Given Imaging (Yoqneam, Israel), which also developed the PillCam. More...
The new software is physician-friendly and has powerful diagnostic tools, making it easier to read and interpret the videos captured from the PillCam SB and ESO video capsules.

"Rapid 4 demonstrates Given Imaging's commitment to continually advancing the science of capsule endoscopy through product innovation,” said Gavriel D. Meron, president and CEO of Given Imaging. "These software advancements will enable new customers to shorten their learning curve and read with confidence, while our current customers will be able to manage their caseload much more efficiently.”

The software includes: QuickView, which allows the clinician to perform a fast, sequential, and intelligent preview of suspicious images when present in the video stream as well as their location in the video prior to performing a full reading; the Rapid Atlas, which allows the clinician to compare the on-screen video image with known small bowel and esophageal reference images stored in the database. The reference images can be searched by findings, diagnosis, or capsule endoscopy standard terminology (CEST); a new automatic viewing mode, which provides an aid for more efficient diagnostic review; and a circumference scale, a tool to help estimate circumferential involvement of a finding detected by PillCam ESO or PillCam SB, such as an esophageal varix or a small bowel ulcer.

Disposable miniature video cameras in the PillCam capsule are ingested by the patient. Once swallowed, the capsule passes naturally through the digestive tract transmitting high-quality color images of the patient's small bowel or esophagus. The DataRecorder is worn around the patient's waist to receive and record signals transmitted by the PillCam video capsule as it passes through the digestive track. Patients can continue their normal daily activities during the examination.
