Shortest Magnet MRI Cleared by FDA

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 09 Mar 2001
A new magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner that is said to be the world's shortest whole-body MRI system has been cleared by the U.S. More...
Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The new scanner, called Infinion 1.5T, is from Marconi Medical Systems, Inc. (Cleveland, OH, USA). The company says it provides high-field imaging power in the most open, patient-friendly scanning environment. Using new magnet technology, Infinion eliminates the traditional tradeoff between magnet length and imaging performance. At only 1.4 m long, the system delivers whole body imaging with no compromise in imaging volume. Marconi says it is the first MRI system to feature a fully removable patient couch combined with a built-in array spine coil. This feature was designed at the request of radiologists to improve their workflow.

The Infinion has been in development for more than two years. "By combining best-in-class features with a design philosophy centered on patient comfort and throughput, the Infinion 1.5T delivers new levels of operational productivity and better accommodates the needs of all patients, including those who suffer from claustrophobia,” said Jerry C. Cirino, executive vice president of global sales and service at Marconi.
