New Hip Stem Offers Thousands of Configurations

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 09 Mar 2001
A three-piece modular femoral hip prosthesis gives surgeons a wide range of options in mixing and matching orthopedic components to get a precise fit to the bone. More...
The components can be combined into more than 45,000 configurations.

The hip stem, called the AcuMatch M Series, is the product of Exactech, Inc. (Gainesville, FL, USA). The stem was cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2000. Since then, the stem has been in clinical evaluation by surgeons, who have suggested further enhancements to extend the range of sizes and combinations, already implemented.

"In testing by a respected independent laboratory, the prosthesis was demonstrated to have great structural integrity with minimal surface effect on the locked taper junctions after millions of cycles of loading,” noted Dr. Gary Miller, vice president of research and development at Exactech. "We believe this level of improvement will be very appealing to surgeons and their patients.”
