New MRI Technologies

Two new techniques for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems can improve image quality and field-of-view (FOV).

The techniques, developed by Toshiba America Medical Systems, Inc. More...
(TAMS; Tustin, CA, USA), are for use with the company's full line of Vantage MRI systems: JET (works-in-progress) and Dual Uniform Overlay (DUO). Both techniques were demonstrated at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) held in Chicago (IL, USA) in November/December 2, 2005.

"Image quality and field-of-view continue to be ongoing concerns for MR professionals,” stated Bob Giegerich, director MRI Business Unit, TAMS. "We believe Toshiba's new JET and Duo techniques will enable clinicians to cover more area in one scan and produce better quality images in the process.”

Utilizing the JET technique, unique motion correction software allows clinicians to reconstruct patient data while sharpening and refining images that may have been unusable because of patient movement. The new technique can deliver near-motionless images and eliminates the need to repeat MR scanning.

The DUO technology allows clinicians to use two SPEEDER coils simultaneously--delivering high-resolution images over an extremely large FOV. With this technique, clinicians are able to image the entire torso (from neck to pelvis), decreasing the time needed to image each patient and improving efficiency.

Toshiba also has broke new ground by initiating contrast-free MRA with its Fresh Pool Imaging (FPI) protocol and body diffusion. The SPEEDER parallel imaging provides for increased acquisition speed that decreases exams times. Toshiba's patented Pianissimo technology reduces acoustic noise by as much as 90%, dramatically decreasing the most significant cause of patient discomfort.
