3-D Mammography Device Cleared by FDA

A new type of mammography device, based on technology originally developed to pinpoint tooth decay, has been cleared by the U.S. More...
Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The technology, called tuned-aperture computed tomography (TACT), allows radiologists to see tumors within the dense part of the breast or in other breast regions that might otherwise be obscured by overlying tissue.

The new technology produces a series of electronic slices that image each portion of the breast in great detail and reconstructs a 3-D image from a series of 2-D images. The technology was developed by Richard Webber, D.D.S., professor of dentistry and radiologic sciences at Wake Forest University School of Medicine (Winston-Salem, NC, USA), and has been licensed by the school to Instrumentarium Imaging (Tuusula, Finland). Instrumentarium calls its TACT device the Delta 32 TACT 3-D breast imaging system, which will be available exclusively on Instrumentarium's Diamond Breast Care System.

According to Dean F. Stell, assistant director of the Office of Technology Asset Management at Wake Forest, TACT is the first imaging system to allow interactive 3-D visualization of breast tissue. "This technology has the potential to cut down on unnecessary biopsies,” he said.
