Chest CAD System for Digital X-Rays

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 22 Dec 2006
A new computer-aided detection (CAD) system for digital chest x-rays has clinically demonstrated an ability to improve radiologists' detection of small lung nodules (5-15 mm) up to 85%. More...

Edda Technology, Inc. (Princeton Junction, NJ, USA), has developed the IQQA-Chest software V2.0 featuring a CAD system for digital x-ray. It is the only U.S. Food and Drug Administration- (FDA)-cleared system to provide real-time interactive diagnostic analysis of digital chest x-rays utilizing a comprehensive set of tools to support radiologists in their identification, confirmation, and quantification of lung nodules.

Powered with the same CAD support software of the software V1.0, the system aims to redefine how advanced clinical applications can and should be accessed by radiologists. Edda has developed a unique enabling system capable of instantly deploying the full functionality of the IQQA-Chest application on existing PACS review consoles without additional requirement or setup effort on the workstations.

According to Dr. Edwin van Beek, professor of radiology, University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics (Iowa City, USA), the need for this level of performance is particularly critical with chest radiography, the most frequently performed imaging study. University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics, a commercial site of Edda's, has recently been upgraded to IQQA-Chest Enterprise.

"With the number of chest x-rays we read on a daily basis, to maximize the benefit from a CAD application will be highly dependent upon the accessibility we have to the full application at our PACS review stations,” added Dr. van Beek. "EDDA has cleared this hurdle with IQQA-Chest Enterprise.”

Dr. van Beek and his colleagues will report on a clinical study conducted at the University of Iowa in which the software was used in their daily practice since January 2006. The study suggests that the software could help residents detect approximately 20% more small lung nodules. The results were presented at the RSNA 2006 meeting, held in November 2006 in Chicago (IL, USA).
