Study Reveals Good Performance of CAD Used with Full Field Mammography Screening

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 28 Aug 2007
A new study demonstrated that computer-aided detection (CAD) correctly tagged 99 (96.1%) of 103 consecutive asymptomatic breast cancers detected with digital mammographic screening, with an acceptable false marker rate (1.80 false CAD marks per patient). More...

The CAD system (ImageChecker M1000 version 3.1) used in this study was from Hologic Inc.'s (Bedford, MA, USA) subsidiary, R2 Technology (Santa Clara, CA, USA). The study was published in the July 2007 issue of Radiology.

Dr. Yang and coworkers, from the Seoul National University Medical Research Center (Korea), reported that the R2 CAD system marked all 44 breast cancers that manifested as microcalcifications only, all 23 breast cancers that manifested as a mass with microcalcifications, and 32 [89%] of 36 lesions that appeared as a mass only.

We are pleased that this study [the first to be published on R2 digital CAD by an independent medical facility] showed such strong results. Of particular note, CAD correctly marked the single invasive lobular carcinoma lesion and 67 of 71 [94.4%] of invasive ductal carcinomas, of which 22 had a component of DCIS. As digital mammography gains wider acceptance, R2's CAD will continue to be a valuable tool to assist radiologists in the earlier detection of breast cancer, said Dr. Ronald A. Castellino, R2 Technology's chief medical officer.

Hologic-R2 is continuing to develop and refine its CAD systems, and is currently marketing ImageChecker V8.3 for digital mammography. Hologic's core business units are focused on mammography and breast biopsy, osteoporosis assessment, and mini C-arm and extremity MRI imaging for orthopedic applications. Hologic is a recognized leader in the development and commercialization of CAD, an innovative technology that assists physicians in the earlier detection of breast cancer.
