Image Management and Archive Capabilities Developed for Radiation Oncology PACS System

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 26 Sep 2007
A new picture archiving and communications system (PACS) workstation with an innovative information management platform enables oncology treatment centers to store and manage patient information, treatment plans, and images captured by a variety of different systems--all from a central database. Carestream Health, Inc. (Rochester, NY, USA) demonstrated the advanced features for its PACS at the 9th European Society of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ESTRO) bi-annual meeting, held in Barcelona, Spain, in September 2007. These include a new image fusion application for positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) imaging and enhancements to native real-time three-dimensional (3D) capabilities.

Additional features of the system include image fusion software that provides enhanced visualization of cancerous tumors and lesions. This software automatically overlays and registers image data from PET/CT systems, allowing oncologists better visualization of anatomic and metabolic information to more confidently assess tumor volumes and disease progression.

Native real-time 2D and 3D capabilities of the system include MIP (maximum intensity projection), MinIP (minimum intensity projection), MPR (multiplanar reconstruction), volume rendering, tissue definition, and vessel tracking functionality from a single virtual desktop.
