A 16-Slice CT with New Detector Technology

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 10 Jul 2001
A high-performance 16-slice computed tomography (CT) scanner can cover more than four centimeters of patient anatomy in one second with submillimeter isotropic accuracy, thanks to new detector technology. More...

The new technology, called Infinite Detector technology, was developed by Marconi Medical Systems, Inc. (Cleveland, OH, USA). The large volume coverage is more than 12 times faster than Marconi's current Mx8000 quad multislice CT scanner. The 16-slice images are acquired in both axial and spiral modes, utilizing cone-beam algorithms. Marconi developed cone-beam reconstruction methods to eliminate cone-beam artifacts. The company says its Infinite Detector technology makes advanced applications routine and is expected to lead to clinical breakthroughs such as noninvasive cardiovascular imaging, fast full-body trauma evaluation, high-detail, low-dose screening exams, and whole organ functional scanning.

"Marconi's unique Infinite Detector technology changes the game by always acquiring thin slices over large volumes so clinicians can diagnose with unprecedented accuracy,” said Jerry Cirino, executive vice president of Marconi. The company notes that every installed Mx8000 scanner, including both dual and quad slice systems, may be quickly and easily upgraded with Infinite Detector Technology.
