Harmonic Detection Enhances Clarity of Ultrasound

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 11 Jul 2001
A new ultrasound system incorporates Harmonic Echo technology that reduces artifacts and clarifies edge definition. More...
The system is particularly useful for radiologists examining obese or other difficult-to-scan patients.

The harmonic detection technology uses the secondary harmonic component of the echo to provide distortion-free transmission of fundamental frequencies. The ultrasound system's wide dynamic range converter offers enhanced contrast resolution that enables radiologists to detect subtle differences in tissue composition. Real-time 3-D Volume Mode imaging delivers life-like 3-D images at high speed, with transabdominal and transvaginal optional scanning probes. Multi-beam processing enhances performance in studies of patient morphology, and a Quint Frequency Imaging feature offers up to five different frequency settings per probe for better penetration and higher resolution.

Called the ProSound SSD-4000, the system was developed by Aloka Co., Ltd. (Tokyo, Japan). To facilitate tissue and blood-flow morphologic studies, a real-time split screen offers simultaneous displays of B mode and B/Flow mode. An integrated DICOM-compatible data management system enables digital communication with DICOM networks and HIS/RIS.
