New PET Scanner Expands Clinical Applications

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 31 Jul 2001
A new positron emission tomography (PET) scanner is based on new detector material called dadoliniumoxyorthosilicate (GSO) that provides much faster scintillation properties, which permit whole body imaging in 3-D at faster speeds, improve imaging quality and throughput, and suggest new clinical and research applications.

Called Allegro, the new PET scanner was developed by Adac Laboratories, a company of Philips Medical Systems (Best, The Netherland). More...
Philips says that systems based on older crystal technology are restricted to 3-D imaging in the brain or have slower scintillation speeds. Allegro is the culmination of an intensive, multi-year effort by the engineering team at Adac and is expected to be used for new clinical applications in neurology and cardiology.

"Allegro represents our commitment to the PET market and we expect it will become the gold standard for PET scanners for many years,” said Gary Burbach, CEO of Adac Laboratories.
