Oncology Researchers Find Dual Scanner Effective

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 03 Aug 2001
Researchers in clinical oncology have found that a new dual scanner, combining positron emission tomography (PET) with computed tomography (CT), is a practical and effective approach to acquiring co-registered anatomical and functional images in a single scanning session. More...
The availability of accurately aligned, whole body anatomical and functional images could have a significant impact on diagnosing and staging malignant disease and on identifying and localizing metastases, the authors note. The images
produced by the combined scanner were also used for evaluating response to therapy.

The research paper has received the 1st place award for "Outstanding Basic Science Investigations.” The paper was published in the August 2000 issue of The Journal of Nuclear Medicine, and the award was presented during the Annual Meeting of the Society of Nuclear Medicine in Toronto (Canada.). The authors were from the PET facility and division of nuclear medicine, department of radiology, at the University of Pittsburgh (UPMC, PA, USA;), CTI PET Systems (Knoxville, TN, USA), and Byars Consulting (Oak Ridge, TN, USA).

Criteria used to determine award recipients included presentation of scientific evidence, groundbreaking technology, and contribution to the nuclear medicine field. The dual scanner, called the Smart PET/CT scanner, is the product of Siemens Medical Solutions (Erlangen, Germany). "It is an extreme privilege for our company to have played a part in this important technologic advancement for the earlier and more complete detection, diagnosis, and treatment of a wide variety of cancers,” said Barbara Franciose, president of Siemens Worldwide Nuclear Medicine business.
