New Technologies Contribute to Multispecialty Ultrasound

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 09 Oct 2001
An ultrasound system that incorporates new technologies is designed to serve as a multispecialty system. More...
It offers several 3-D functions, pulse inversion harmonics, digital stress echo imaging, and a multiplane TEE probe for special cardiac function—all under the name of Gold Performance 2001. The system also offers connectivity that is well integrated with software for ultrasound image-management (SonoView Pro) on a PC, enabling all images to be sent to doctors or hospitals anytime and anywhere.

The most important feature of this ultrasound system, called Sonoace 9900, is the 3-D function, says the developer, Medison Co., Ltd. (Seoul, Korea). This function includes Live 3-D, 3-D measurement, multiplanar view, and volume 3-D probe. Live 3-D generates images with maximum four-volume frames per second and displays a moving organ or fetus in real-time with good image quality. Pulse inversion harmonics offer clear cardiac imaging and increase the edge of black-and-white images through filtering. The system also automatically recognizes internal organs, utilizing technology called Organ Specified Image Optimization (OSIO). In spite of these advances, Medison notes that the cost of the Sonoace 9900 is 30-40% lower than comparable products on the market.

At the recent Fifth World Congress of Perinatal Medicine in Barcelona (Spain), Medison received a special award recognizing the company's contributions to the field of perinatal ultrasound, especially in 3-D technology.

Lee Seung-woo, CEO of Medison, says that the pending purchase of its subsidiary, Kreztechnik (Zipf, Austria), by GE Medical Systems (Waukesha, WI, USA) may expand GE's share of the 3D ultrasound market. Accordingly, Medison plans to strengthen its competitive efforts in this market by the development of new 3-D models and the addition of advanced functions.
