New Diagnostic Ultrasound Image-Processing Technique

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 19 Oct 2001
A new image-processing technique for diagnostic ultrasound enhances subtle diagnostic information by helping the eye to better perceive patterns, states the developer, Philips Medical Systems (Best, The Netherlands; www.ultrasound.philips.com). More...
At the same time, common ultrasound artifacts such as speckle and clutter are virtually eliminated.

Called Xres, the processing technique can perform 350 million calculations per frame in real-time, analyzing and adapting the content within the image in a process similar to that of the human brain. In fact, the development of Xres was influenced by the findings of Philips Research, which had conducted extensive studies on the human eye's ability to distinguish patterns in the different imaging modalities. Based on some of these findings, Philips created and applied an algorithm to ultrasound exams to improve a physician's ability to define tissue boundaries and assess identifying characteristics. Xres is available on the ATL HDI 5000 SonoCT ultrasound system.

"With Xres imaging, the internal architecture of complex thyroid cysts is definitely enhanced,” said Dr. Simon T. Elliott, consulting radiologist, Freeman Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne (UK). "Thin septations now appear as clean linear structures. There is improved contrast between the soft tissue and fluid components. Calcifications are brighter and better defined.”
