Image-Guided Tissue Marker Aids Doctors

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 30 Oct 2001
A new image-guided tissue marker enables a breast lesion to be easily marked by a radiologist or immediately by a surgeon after a core biopsy. More...
If biopsy results are abnormal, the marker is readily visible under x-ray, ultrasound, or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to aid the surgeon in the re-excision process.

The marker is called UltraClip. The clip is pre-loaded into the needle and ready to be deployed in a matter of seconds. Also, the needle and clip are echogenic, making them easy to see under ultrasound. When re-excision of a lesion is needed, the UltraClip allows for exact localization of the biopsy site so the surgeon can perform a minimally invasive procedure. This decreases the amount of breast tissue removed. The UltraClip is the product of Inrad, Inc. (Grand Rapids, MI, USA).

"Radiologists like the UltraClip because it is quick and easy to use,” said Dr. Richard M. Chesbrough, who helped develop the device. "Inrad is the only company in the marketplace to offer a stand-alone, ready-to-use, disposable tissue marking system.”
