Breast Imaging System Without Radiation

By HospiMedica staff writers

A new breast imaging system incorporating diffraction energy imaging (DEI) provides detailed images of the breast without the use of radiation or compression. More...
The system, called Avera, was introduced at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of America (RSNA) in Chicago (IL, USA).

The Avera system combines several technologies into one imaging technique, including multiplanar scanning that produces high-quality volumetric image sets with the potential for 3-D reconstruction and DEI soft tissue imaging technology. A major advantage of the system is its ability to identify tissue boundaries much like mammography but without the radiation risk or the discomfort of compression. Avera offers a large field of view and real-time viewing, which make the system useful for image-guided procedures such as biopsies. The system was developed by Advanced Diagnostics Systems, Inc. (ADI, Preston, WA, USA).

"Results from our clinical trials have been promising,” said Denis O'Connor, chairman and CEO of ADI. "DEI appears to be particularly effective in women with dense breast tissue for whom mammography can be ineffective or inappropriate.” The Avera is the first of several DEI-based imaging systems being developed by ADI.
