Open PET/CT Scanner Unveiled

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 10 Dec 2001
A new imaging system that combines positron emission tomography (PET) with computed tomography (CT) features an open layout that reduces the claustrophobic feelings many patients experience in closed systems while improving the access doctors have to patients. More...
The system, called Gemini, was introduced at the Annual Meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) in Chicago (IL, USA).

Gemini provides the key requirements of a combined PET/CT scanner. The PET portion provides the physiologic imaging that is an established tool for studying cancer patients, while the multislice CT improves tumor localization. Combining functional and anatomic data is intended to improve diagnosing, staging, and follow-up for many types of cancer and to be useful for guiding surgery and radiation therapy. By incorporating an open area between the two scanners, Gemini overcomes one of the primary limitations of competitive systems, says Philips Medical Systems (Best, The Netherlands), which developed the system. Gemini combines the high-throughput multislice CT scanner with Philips' Allegro PET imaging system.

"We expect Gemini to become the ‘gold standard' in combined modality imaging due to its state-of-the-art Allegro PET scanner, multislice CT, and open design,” said Gary Burbach, CEO of the Philips Nuclear Medicine business line. "We carefully evaluated the needs of patients and clinicians and existing combined PET/CT designs when developing Gemini.”
