Speedy Way to Transmit Images via Internet

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 04 Mar 2002
A patented new image-compression method permits medical images to be transmitted over the Internet at 10 times the speed of conventional compression, enabling rapid image transfer between intensivists, radiologists, surgeons, and orthopedists. More...

The method also reduces the space needed for storing volumes of x-ray, tomography, and ultrasound images by about 10%. The process was developed by the Institut fur Telematik (Trier, Germany), where researchers found a way to prevent the loss of image quality that usually occurs with compressed images. As a result, the images are virtually identical to the originals. The Java-based software, called Dicomzip, can run on any platform and self-installs. It is being marketed by ITM Services AG (Essen, Germany).

"We're basically dividing the original image of an x-ray or computer tomography examination into two pictures,” explained Prof. Christoph Meinel, director of the Institut fur Telematik. "One shows the actual contents of the image, the other contains unimportant technical components.”
