Digital Breast Imaging Systems

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 14 Oct 2002
Two new breast imaging systems are designed for diagnostic digital spot imaging and 3-D imaging. More...
Both have been cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The digital 3-D mammography imaging unit is based on the new TACT (tuned aperture computed tomography) algorithm reconstruction technique. This patented technique acquires a number of 2-D digital images of the breast from different angles. To obtain the images, the breast is gently compressed with a normal spot imaging compression paddle and then exposed from different directions, using the stereotactic tube-head movement. The technology is designed to help doctors study ambiguous cases and reduce the number of missed breast cancers.

The two systems, from Instrumentarium Imaging (Helsinki, Finland), are called Delta 32 and Delta TACT. The company says the Delta TACT can improve detection of changes within breast tissue that might otherwise be missed, improve verification of targets for biopsies, and reduce the number of biopsies needed. The workstations of Delta 32 and Delta 32 TACT can also be used for stand-alone viewing of images.
