New Ultrasound Shows Images of Beating Heart

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 13 Feb 2003
A new ultrasound system enables cardiologists to obtain real-time 3D images of a beating heart, a useful aid in diagnosing cardiac problems and for surgical planning. More...
The system has been cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The system incorporates Live 3D Echo technology, which allows doctors to view the heart instantaneously, as though they were holding it in their hands, viewing it from different perspectives and seeing the intricate correlation between valves, chambers, and vessels—all without opening the patient's chest. Live 3D Echo has the potential to enhance diagnoses and surgical planning, provide life assessment of heart-valve function, reduce examination times, and improve communication between doctors and patients.

The Live 3D Echo technology is incorporated in the Sonos 7500 ultrasound system of Philips Medical Systems (Best, The Netherlands). "The availability of Live 3D Echo on a fully functional echo system makes 3D a practical and convenient tool for physicians. We believe real-time ultrasound has the potential to advance echocardiography from the diagnostic realm into clinical treatment,” said Kevin Appareti, director for cardiovascular ultrasound, Philips Medical Systems.
