Software Allows Colonoscopy with CT

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 11 Jun 2003
New software makes it possible to perform noninvasive colonoscopy using computed tomography (CT) technology. More...
The software has been cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The technology combines enhanced digital image-processing tools with workflow and reporting capabilities and is designed to support the doctor in studying the inside (intra-luminal view), the outside (extra-luminal view), and the wall of the colon. The software, called syngo colonography, is a self-contained image-analysis package that can be used with both the Somatom Emotion and Somatom Sensation CT systems of (Erlangen, Germany).

The software enables doctors to view datasets from both the prone and supine positions, facilitating the detection of colonic lesions, in addition to evaluating, documenting, and following up any lesions using standard multi-slice spiral CT or magnetic resonance (MR) scanning. Volumetric analysis of colonic polyps or lesion size over time will help doctors to assess changes in growth. Moreover, the noninvasive procedure will be an attractive option for patients who are resistant to invasive procedures.

"The advanced applications made possible by this technology can potentially help position the physician and the patient for earlier diagnosis and treatment planning,” said Dr. Praveen Nadkarni, marketing manager, cardiac and preventive care, CT marketing division of Siemens Medical Solutions.
