New Technologies Enhance MRI System

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 30 Jul 2003
New technologic advances for a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system are designed to improve resolution and increase the speed of the imaging process.

One advance called Propeller incorporates new pulse sequence technology based on Fast Spin Echo that acquires data in radial blades that rotate. More...
Propeller has an extremely low sensitivity to motion and improves the contrast-to-noise ratio by 25-75%, significantly reducing tissue-to-air distortions. This advance enables doctors to see areas of the head and brain previously compromised by abnormalities or patient movement.

Another advance called Vibrant produces high quality sagittal images of both breasts in the same amount of time previously required to image a single breast. The technique also integrates a patented fat suppression technology. A third advance called Tricks helps to identify blood clots and other vascular diseases in the lower extremities. All three advances are designed for use on the MRI Excite platform of GE Medical Systems (Waukesha, WI, USA).

"The introduction of these new imaging techniques significantly enhances Excite's performance and reinforces what we said last year, that Excite is the MR platform of the future,” noted Dennis Cooke, general manager of GE Medical Systems' global MR business.
