New Imaging Technology Improves Cancer Diagnosis

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 27 Aug 2003
New technology called image fusion technology combines images from three modalities into a 3-D image is designed to give doctors a better view of the size, location, and molecular activity of a tumor, resulting in a more accurate diagnosis and better treatment plans.

The new technology combines images from computed tomography (CT), positron emission tomography (PET), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). More...
The technology was developed by Parker Hughes Cancer Center (Roseville, MN, USA) and Hitachi Medical Systems (Tokyo, Japan). Parker Hughes is a diagnostics, treatment, and research facility focused on eradicating cancer and inflammatory disorders.

"What fusion and PET scanning allow us to do is within a very short time, a few days, we can see whether or not a chemotherapy treatment plan is working or not,” noted Michael Hoefer, president of Imaging Solutions, which also collaborates with the imaging facility at Parker Hughes. "So this can give us a many, many weeks' head start on allowing us to look at the tumor and how it is reacting so we can now adjust the chemotherapy treatment very quickly to the right treatment plan. Before this technology, there was nothing that allowed us to do that.”
