The Government of Victoria (Melbourne, Australia) has opened the new Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre (AWRCC; East Albury, Australia), which will provide radiotherapy (RT) services on the border with New South Wales (NSW) and throughout North East Victoria.

The new AWRCC facility features 30 in-patient beds, 30 chemotherapy beds, three radiotherapy bunkers, consulting suites, a wellness center, and 140 new car parking spaces. The aim of the center is to bring together, wherever possible, all cancer-related services currently scattered across Albury and Wodonga, making it easier for cancer patients and their families to access RT, medical oncology, and chemotherapy services, as well as a dispensing pharmacy.

Under an agreement between the Victorian and NSW state governments and Albury Wodonga Health (Wodononga, Australia), cancer patients in the surrounding region will be receive public RT services from GenesisCare (Alexandria, Australia), Australia's largest provider of radiation oncology, cardiology, and sleep treatments, which has relocated its services into the AWRCC. The capacity, number of procedures undertaken, and funding will be ensured by the Victorian and NSW state governments.

“Wodonga patients can now easily access the radiotherapy services they need, closer to home and loved ones, without having to travel to Melbourne or Bendigo for lifesaving treatment,” said Jill Hennessy, Victorian state minister of health. “I don’t think there’s any doubt that the demand will grow from this day and only increase, particularly if someone knows that going to Melbourne is not going to them better treatment or a better experience.”

“My dream with the members of this community was very much that it would cover everyone, that it would look after as many patients as possible,” said Australian Federal Health Minister Sussan Ley. “It would look after people who have to travel when travel is such a burden when you have a cancer diagnosis. And it’s already ticking so many boxes.”
