New Phototherapy Treats Skin Disorders

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 21 Jan 2004
A computer-controlled, targeted phototherapy system developed by Israeli researchers utilizes both ultraviolet-b (UVB) and ultraviolet-a (UVA) rays to treat psoriasis and other skin disorders. More...
The system has been cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Called MultiClear, the system is the first computer-controlled phototherapy system to utilize both UVB and UVA rays. The system has proven safe and effective for treating psoriasis, vitiligo, atopic dermatitis, and leukoderma. MultiClear is manufactured by CureLight Ltd. (Or Akiva, Israel), which sees it as a nondrug alternative that protects patients from exposing their entire bodies to potentially harsh or risky treatments.

"It's safe, responsive, and gets good aesthetic results as well,” said Dr. David J. Friedman, a dermatologist and former assistant professor at Brown University (Providence, RI, USA), who uses MultiClear for his patients. "Typical treatment lasts about five minutes and that's another real plus. Usually less than 10 treatments are needed.”
