New Endoscopic Spine Fusion System

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 07 Nov 2001
A new system based on endoscopic technology is a minimally invasive alternative to open spine fusion that significantly reduces muscle and tissue damage and patient trauma.

The system, called the Atavi atraumatic spine fusion system, enables surgeons to perform a complete posterolateral spine fusion, including access to surgical site, preparation of fusion bed, delivery of graft, and application of pedicle screw fixation. More...
Early results show reductions in blood loss during surgery as well as less postoperative pain and discomfort and less reliance on narcotic pain medication.

Atavi's visualization system includes a spine endoscope, camera, light source, and a camera-mount system. Access tools include the Endo Retractor, a proprietary surgical instrument that enables doctors to create a broad surgical space over the appropriate spinal anatomy, and the Biopolar Sheath, which works with the Microbrider System to reduce blood loss during surgery and help surgeons gain clear access to the spine for accurate placement of surgical implants.

The Atavi System was developed by Endius (Plainville, MA, USA). More than 18 surgeons at leading US hospitals around the country have completed 100 clinical cases using Atavi. "Atavi is becoming an attractive investment for hospital administrators who now have the potential for significant cost savings related to patient care, compared to the expenses typically associated with more-invasive spine fusion surgeries,” said Donald A. Grill, president and CEO of Endius.
