Cryosurgery for Treatment of Atrial Fibrillation

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 25 Feb 2002
The Cryocare Surgical System uses specially designed malleable cryoprobes to create long linear lesions through the heart wall to block aberrant electrical signals that cause atrial fibrillation. More...
The system has been cleared by the US Food and drug Administration (FDA) for minimally invasive surgical treatment of arrhythmia and atrial fibrillation.

Atrial fibrillation occurs when the two small upper chambers of the heart quiver. Blood is not pumped completely out of them when the heart beats, so it may pool and clot. If a piece of the blot becomes lodged in an artery in the brain, it can cause a stroke. The Cryocare Surgical System is the product of Endocare, Inc. (Irvine, CA, USA), a company focused on the development of urologic healthcare technologies.

"The new FDA clearance is especially important in the area of cardiac disease and it opens the door for a new generation of devices currently under development that treat certain cardiac conditions in a less-invasive fashion,” said Paul Mikus, chairman and CEO of Endocare.
