Critical-Care Patient Monitoring Data Available on Mobile Phones

A new patient monitoring system helps physicians focus on broad range of critical- care information, supporting efficient clinical decision-making using Apple mobile devices.

The AirStrip Patient Monitoring (PM) system securely delivers patient monitoring information to critical-care physicians’ iPhones and iPads, empowering them with the ability to interact with, manipulate, and zoom in on more than 100 clinical measurements, and access physiologic data and monitoring waveforms, anytime and anywhere. Because the physicians can directly view and zoom in on live clinical measurements, AirStrip PM offers physicians greater decision support than traditional mobile viewing applications, which do not enable a high level of interaction and provide only limited subsets of data.

The system helps clinicians access near real-time data and historical patient information up to 24 hours earlier by linking with the General Electric (GE) Healthcare (Chalfont St Giles, United Kingdom) portfolio of comprehensive patient monitoring platforms, such as the Carescape Monitor B850, the Carescape Monitor B650, and Solar and Dash monitors. This linkage gives physicians access to patient waveforms, vital signs, and other critical clinical measurements on interactive iPad and iPhone displays. The clinical data is thus securely stored on hospital servers, rather than residing on doctors’ mobile devices.

The connections are established via Carescape Gateway, which interfaces biomedical devices with hospital information systems (HISs) to streamline otherwise disparate clinical information. The AirStrip Patient Monitoring (PM) system is a joint effort of GE Healthcare and Airstrip Technologies (San Antonio, TX, USA), and has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Community (CE Marking).

“As doctors increasingly use smartphones and tablets, GE Healthcare is committed to driving convergence between mobile technologies, biomedical devices, and clinical information systems,” said Thierry Leclercq, general manager of Life Care Solutions at GE Healthcare. “Empowering doctors with highly interactive patient monitoring information, when and where it is needed, supports physician decision-making and ultimately, patient safety and care.”

“The mobile technology platform at the heart of AirStrip Patient Monitoring can revolutionize the way healthcare is delivered by decentralizing secure, actionable patient information and making it accessible virtually anytime, anywhere,” said Cameron Powell, MD, President and Chief Medical Officer of Airstrip Technologies. “AirStrip Patient Monitoring unites a strong user experience with the ability for clinicians to make faster, more informed treatment decisions via their mobile device, which can then improve patient care and overall workflow in ways that doctors are already embracing.”
