Hands-Free Data Access Helps Healthcare Workers Improve Patient Care

A new application that runs on a wearable headset computer improves time efficiency and patient care for paramedics and field medical staff. More...

The Paramedic Pro medical application provides a sophisticated and easy-to-use set of capabilities that allows healthcare workers to access and record vital information quickly and completely hands-free. The Paramedic Pro is designed to run on the Golden-I, a head mounted computer developed by Kopin Corporation (Taunton, MA, USA) that features a monocular head mounted display and uses a speech controlled user interface and head-tracking functionality that enables the user to carry out common computer functions while keeping their hands free.

The application software provides video chat, audio recording, and access to information at the point of care (POC). The built-in camera and Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity enables direct video communication between field medical staff and healthcare facilities, so that experts at a hospital can assess a situation and provide timely advice. Paramedics can talk to colleagues using the headset’s video chat capabilities, providing a standardized way to communicate data such as an estimated time of arrival (ETA) back to the hospital, and for staff on the scene to view the patient’s medical records.

The Golden-I headset provides a near-eye, virtual 15-inch PC display and near-ear speaker. It uses natural speech recognition and six-axis gesture sensing, and a camera to record and send images or streaming video. It also enables medical staff to view maps and use GPS to track their location. The Paramedic Pro medical application was developed by Ikanos Consulting (West Bridgford, United Kingdom), who also developed the Golden-I operating system (Gi-OS), that provides other built-in applications, including a fully-featured email program, a file browser, a web browser, and a media player.

“In emergencies, every second counts; Paramedic Pro provides the communications and information that medics need to save time, and to deliver the best possible patient care,” said James Woodall, CEO of Ikanos Consulting. “Ikanos Consulting is also developing Gi-OS-based applications for other industry sectors, and has the capabilities to create bespoke software solutions as required by specific customers.”
