Cygnet Healthcare (Sevenoaks, United Kingdom), part of Universal Health Services (UHS; King of Prussia, PA, USA), has acquired specialist psychiatric care provider Alpha Hospitals (Knaphill, United Kingdom).

Alpha Hospitals is a leading provider of low and medium secure mental health care services in the UK. The company was established in 2002, with four purpose built, state of the art hospitals in Bury in the Greater Manchester area, Sheffield in South Yorkshire, and Woking in Surrey. The hospitals provide a range of psychiatric care for those with mental health conditions and learning difficulties. Specialist mental health services include personality disorders, mental illness, rehabilitation, and services for the deaf with mental illness, as well as all child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHs) Tier4 level.

The acquisition adds 305 beds the Cygnet Healthcare network, which currently operates 17 centers with more than 730 beds. Two of the units are registered nursing homes providing long term and respite care for private fee-paying elderly residents. Cygnet Healthcare also runs Detox 5, an opiate detoxification service with an abstinence and recovery focus that delivers five day, pain free opiate detoxification. According to the terms of the deal, valued at GBP 95 million, the hospitals will continue operating under the Alpha name for the immediate future.

“We have always viewed Cygnet and Alpha’s operations as a good match and I personally am delighted to have completed this acquisition,” said David Cole, CEO of Cygnet. “Alpha Hospitals has a very good pedigree and an excellent reputation in the sector. Like Cygnet, it is a brand that portrays quality and confidence, and boasts very strong customer relationships.”

“We are pleased to announce the acquisition of Alpha and welcome them into our growing system in the UK,” said Alan Miller, board chairman of Universal Health Services. “The facility locations are an excellent geographical fit and their services are complementary to Cygnet's existing portfolio.”
