New MRI Scanner Four Times Faster

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 30 May 2002
New magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology enables an MRI scanner to operate up to four times faster than other scanners, shortening exam times and expanding the capabilities of MRI. More...
This MRI advance was showcased at the 10th Scientific Meeting of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine, in Hawaii (USA).

The new technology not only increases the speed of MRI but also improves resolution and image quality, thereby expanding the limits of MRI to include new applications and research capabilities. The technology, called GE Excite, was developed by GE Medical Systems (Waukesha, WI, USA) and is available on the company's new and previously installed Signa Infinity 1.5T MR scanners as part of an upgrade program. GE states that the new technology will allow doctors to improve their diagnosis of heart conditions, stroke, abdominal and brain disorders, and common knee and shoulder problems. The ability to quickly capture high resolution images of moving anatomy such as the heart and vascular system will be particularly useful.

"For the first time we have the opportunity to capture images at the speed of life,” said Lawrence N. Tanenbaum, M.D., of the New Jersey Neuroscience Institute (USA). "GE Excite means MR studies are more comfortable for patients, especially those who have difficulty holding their breath in certain abdominal procedures.”
