AI Tool Automates EEG Analysis and Flags Clinically Relevant Abnormalities

By HospiMedica International staff writers
Posted on 22 Jul 2026

Electroencephalography (EEG) interpretation is labor-intensive and places sustained pressure on clinical resources, particularly as case volumes and complexity rise. More...

Hospitals need tools that reduce manual review time without sacrificing diagnostic rigor or consistency. Automated assessments that flag clinically relevant abnormalities and indicate whether an EEG study is normal or abnormal can streamline workflows and support timely decision-making. A new system has launched to broaden access to artificial intelligence–supported EEG analysis by embedding it within established neurodiagnostic software.

Natus Medical Incorporated has added the autoSCORE analysis tool to the latest update of BRAIN QUICK Software, extending availability of AI-supported EEG interpretation across Europe and other international markets. The tool first debuted with the company’s NeuroWorks EEG Software in the United States in August 2024. In March, the analysis tool received the CE mark for European and other international markets, supporting broader clinical deployment in those regions.

The autoSCORE algorithm is designed to ease demands on staff by automating elements of EEG review using a deep-learning model trained on 30,000 expertly labeled EEG recordings. Beyond traditional spike and seizure detectors, it evaluates multiple clinically relevant abnormalities and delivers study-level assessments that indicate whether an EEG is normal or abnormal. The closed artificial intelligence model is intended to ensure consistency and security while supporting clinician confidence.

By bringing advanced automation into BRAIN QUICK Software, the update aims to allow clinicians to spend less time on manual analysis and more time on direct patient care. Early adopters reported that the tool’s output instills confidence and that recording reliability within the latest BRAIN QUICK release is a key element in high-volume, high-complexity settings such as presurgical evaluation. With both NeuroWorks and BRAIN QUICK now featuring autoSCORE, the company reports a strengthened foundation for continuing development of its neurodiagnostic portfolio.

“Our autoSCORE AI tool represents a meaningful step forward in digital neurodiagnostics, where precision, speed, and clinical confidence come together to benefit both healthcare professionals and the patients they serve,” said Cristiano Rizzo, Natus General Manager EMEA/APAC. “Our goal is to support neurologists with technology that augments their expertise, ensuring that every patient benefits from timely, data-driven insights without compromising clinical rigor. Bringing advanced automation to BRAIN QUICK enables clinicians to spend less time on manual analysis and more time delivering high-quality care; ultimately, enhancing the patient journey.”

“Artificial intelligence has the potential to transform EEG practice in the same way digital EEG transformed neurophysiology decades ago,” said Professor Oriano Mecarelli of the Department of Neurosciences at Sapienza University of Rome. “Tools like autoSCORE may help expand access to expertise, improve workflow efficiency, and support clinicians in increasingly complex environments.”
