Strong Growth Seen for Burn Treatment Market

The US$1.5 billion world market for burn treatments will show double-digit gains in the coming years, according to a new study from Kalorama Information, an independent market research company (Wound Care Market Volume II: Burns, New York, NY, USA). More...
However, only cleansing, debridement, and silver dressings products will grow significantly from advances in product offerings and distribution changes.

The market will be driven mainly by new product innovations in the treatment of burns, a difficult problem that continues to represent significant unmet need. The increasing importance of burn care centers as a distribution channel will also affect the market. Burn center admissions have doubled in recent years, now representing about 50% of total burn care admissions.

"The burn segment of the wound care market has generally been of less interest to most developers because of the smaller patient population,” notes Steven Heffner, acquisitions editor at Kalorama. "However, when you look at the cost of these injuries and the ineffectiveness of current treatments to address them, there is great opportunity in the area, particularly for the more innovative approaches we noted in our research.”

The study analyzes the world market for products used in burn care, including pressure relief devices, anti-infective products, cleansing and debridement products, silver dressings, moist dressings, biologic products such as artificial skin and collagen, and other treatments. Another study to be published in the fall of 2003 will examine the surgical and trauma wound care market.
