Innovative Oximeter Accurately Monitors Oxygen in Brain

By HospiMedica International staff writers
Posted on 25 Sep 2013
A next-generation cerebral oximeter provides a highly accurate, noninvasive, continuous measurement of absolute cerebral tissue oxygen saturation.

The Fore-Sight Elite cerebral oximeter for direct monitoring of tissue oxygenation provides a powerful tool that alerts clinicians to otherwise unrecognized and dangerously low levels of oxygenation of the brain, as well as other tissues. More...
The improved device includes several important features, including the ability to monitor four channels of patient information; a larger, higher contrast viewing screen; and intuitive touch-screen controls. Five wavelengths of light are used to interrogate cerebral tissue under the optical sensor, allowing extremely accurate measurement of oxygenation levels.

Among the features of the device are spot checks to instantly evaluate a patient's cerebral oxygen saturation status, noninvasive and continuous measurement in perioperative settings of cerebral oxygen saturation status, the ability to observe and intervene to reverse desaturation events as they occur, and enhanced response time for instantaneous feedback, enabling swifter response times. Measurements are not affected by patient temperature, and the data is updated every 2 seconds. The Fore-Sight Elite cerebral oximeter is a product of CAS Medical Systems (CASMED; Branford, CT, USA), and has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

“With Elite's new features, lower production cost, and even greater accuracy, we have widened our competitive advantage,” said Thomas M. Patton, president and CEO of CASMED. “We believe the Elite can increase our share of the market and also drive overall market growth by helping establish cerebral oximetry as a standard of care.”

“Monitoring cerebral oximetry is a critical element of our treatment protocols for many of our surgical patients. Therefore, it is incumbent upon us to use the best monitoring solutions available,” commented professor of anesthesiology and cardiothoracic surgery Gregory Fischer, MD, of Mount Sinai Hospital (New York, NY, USA). “From our early investigational work with the product through our initial clinical use, it appears that Fore-Sight Elite sets a new standard for accuracy and ease of use in cerebral monitoring.”
