Noninvasive Monitor Tracks Anemia and Hemorrhage

By HospiMedica International staff writers
Posted on 20 Nov 2013
A breakthrough device offers a noninvasive, pain-free solution for accurate hemoglobin (Hb), oxygen saturation (SpO2), low perfusion oximetry, pulse rate, and plethysmogram measurement.

The NBM-200MP noninvasive Hb and pulse oximetry monitor provides a quick, accurate and painless measurement of blood constituents, holding the potential for improving anemia detection and enabling swift and continuous Hb measurement and level analysis, which can be critical when monitoring bleeding in acute conditions, such as during surgery or childbirth. The system is compatible with a variety of clinical environments, including hospitals, outpatient clinics and mobile health, and can be used for various applications such as primary care, public screening, women’s health, and homecare.

The monitor is based on occlusion spectroscopy and a ring-shaped sensor that is fitted on the subject's finger. Gentle pressure is applied by the sensor, temporarily occluding the blood flow in the finger and creating new blood dynamics that generate a unique, strong optical transmission signal. Optical elements in the sensor perform a sensitive measurement of the light transmitted through the finger, with a high signal-to-noise ratio wholly blood specific. The NBM-200MP is a product of OrSense (Petach Tikva, Israel), and has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

“Although over 400 million Hb lab tests are performed annually in the US alone, this important blood test remains costly, time consuming, invasive, and intermittent,” said Lior Maayan, CEO of OrSense. “Our noninvasive hemoglobin monitor offers a true revolution in the management of both acute and chronic anemia.”
