Single Robotic Platform Supports Three Minimally Invasive Approaches

Conventional platforms use rigid instruments that can generate large external motions and increase collision risk. Surgeons also need flexibility to match the approach to each case. A newly cleared system now supports all three approaches on a single flexible platform.

The Anovo Surgical System from Momentis Surgical received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(k) clearance on July 23, 2026, for its multiport configuration. The decision extends prior indications for natural orifice and single-port use, making Anovo the first robotic surgical system to support all three access approaches on a single platform. The clearance allows general surgeons to choose single-site or multiport techniques for ventral hernia repair and adds a multiport option to single-site and transvaginal approaches for gynecologic surgeons.

Anovo is a flexible robotic platform that employs proprietary internally articulated, humanoid-inspired instruments with shoulder-, elbow-, and wrist-like joints. By shifting the articulation point inside the patient, the system minimizes external arm movement while maintaining true 360-degree dexterity at the surgical site. This architecture contrasts with conventional robotic systems that use rigid, straight instruments linked to bulky external arms, which can increase the risk of arm collisions.

The clearance expands platform modularity so hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers can offer multiple robotic approaches without investing in separate specialized systems. The platform’s compact footprint and simplified workflow, together with lower capital requirements, are described as designed to improve access in both hospital and outpatient settings. 

The latest action builds on earlier regulatory milestones for the platform, including the first FDA De Novo authorization for a robotic transvaginal surgical system, subsequent clearances for single-site transabdominal ventral hernia repair, and the recent addition of robotic camera control. Until now, hospitals have largely had to choose robotic systems based on surgical approach; the new clearance consolidates these options within one system.

“From the beginning, our vision was never to build another robotic system that simply replicated laparoscopy. We set out to rethink robotic surgery from the inside out. This clearance represents another important step toward that vision by giving surgeons the flexibility to choose the appropriate surgical approach for the patients' benefit while using the same compact robotic platform,” said Dvir Cohen, Chief Executive Officer of Momentis Surgical.
